I had the pleasure of spending a couple of weeks at my parent’s home last month. It has been two years since I have been home and I was so excited to spend some quality time with them and decorate some rooms of their new home. One of the main focuses was the spare bathroom just to the right after you enter the home. My mom’s wishes were to make it moody and blend with the rest of their home. I love a good transformation with a budget in mind and can’t wait for you to see the results.
Design Board
I always create a design board for my clients to visualize what a room will look like when completed. Of course, changes are made when the process starts, but the overall feel stays the same.
Below is the look I wanted for this small spare bathroom. It’s moody & traditional with modern touches!
Inspiration
The dog painting! When I asked my mom her vision for this space, she said she wanted it to be moody! We went into a local MO antique store one day and instantly spotted it! I knew this was going to be my inspiration for this space with all of his moody colors! It didn’t take long to start pulling things together.
What Stayed
We wanted this space to have a refresh, not a complete remodel. All of the big pieces were left. My parents did not want the vanity painted, so I worked the wood tone into my plan to add to the moodiness. The original floors also stayed.
What’s New
Narragansett Green by Benjamin Moore is a color I have wanted to use for so long. It is part of the Historical Color Collection. The rich color has such a timeless and elegant feel to it and would look great in both traditional and contemporary spaces.
The builder mirror had to go and was replaced with a simple black round one. My mom wanted this adorable light fixture she discovered from another blogger. It fit perfectly and added some charm to this space. The nickel hardware was replaced by antique brass to continue the warm feel throughout the bathroom. Beautiful new modern gold/black pulls give this vanity a fresh look. Some accessories are new and some borrowed from other spaces in their home. It’s always great if you can shop your own home for room makeovers.
How It Works
Now, this spare bathroom is a room that flows with the rest of their home. It has the perfect blend of traditional & modern touches and old & new pieces. The moody vibe fits my mom’s wish and now it’s the perfect little cozy space.

I love this fancy toilet paper holder.
One of my favorite things that my mom collects is these beautiful Spy / Vanity Fair Lithographic prints. Isn’t he handsome! Adding the pieces she loves makes this space more personal and curates a look more personal to her.
The little painting I bought for my mom when she was visiting Virginia last year. It is a painting of George Washingtons Mount Vernon. If you are ever in Northern VA, it is a must-see!
